Dr Paul Watson

Paul Watson, PhD, RN, SCPHN, is an Associate Professor in Military-Connected Children and Young People’s Health & Well-being at ֲýƵ and Assistant Director of the Northern Hub for Veterans and Military Families Research. His work focuses on improving their emotional health and well-being and supporting military families, and has a growing national and international research portfolio, including collaboration with Denmark and the USA.

After leaving the Armed Forces, Dr Watson pursued a career in nursing, completing a BSc in Mental Health Nursing with a focus on children’s mental health. He then obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (School Nursing) and served as a school nurse at Catterick Military Garrison, directly supporting military families. This experience shaped his research interests and deepened his commitment to advocating for military-connected children.

Dr Watson leads research through a Public Health lens on military-connected children and young people, emotional health and well-being. Dr Watson is currently leading two national projects focusing on the Social Determinants of Health (SDH), examining how factors such as housing, community, and education impact well-being.; and exploring Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), Benevolent Childhood Experiences (BCEs), and Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs), investigating adversity, resilience, and protective factors.

His expertise in narrative methodologies and co-production ensures military children's voices shape policies and support systems, improving outcomes for military families. In 2022, he completed his PhD, The Experiences of Being a Young Carer of a Veteran Parent with PTSD: A Narrative Inquiry, further deepening his understanding of military-connected youth. Through his work, Dr Watson continues to drive policy and practice improvements to better support military families and their well-being.
