After completing a BSc in Sport Science, Stuart completed an MSc in Applied Sport Science at St. Mary's University College. He then studied for a PhD within the Centre for Sports Medicine and Human Performance at Brunel University before taking up a Research Associate post at Northumbria in February 2011. Stuart began as a Senior Lecturer in October 2012, was appointed Associate Professor in September 2019, and Professor of Neuromuscular Physiology in 2025.
In September 2025, Stuart became the Associate Head of School for Research and Knowledge Exchange along with being the UoA 24 REF Lead. He currently holds three invited editorial positions with (MSSE, Associate Editor-in-Chief), (Associate Editor), and (Associate Editor), and is an External Examiner for the BSc in Sport & Exercise Science at Liverpool John Moores University (2024 - 2029).
Stuart is the institutional representative for the Physiological Society ().
