Dr Charlotte Gordon

Assistant Professor

School: Healthcare and Nursing Sciences

I am a researcher and registered nurse with over 20 years of clinical research experience, grounded in the Biological Sciences. As both a researcher and clinician, I bridge the gap between cutting-edge healthcare science and compassionate person-centred care.

My research career spans multiple specialities, with particular depth in diabetes risk reduction and management. Beginning in critical care, I developed my expertise towards managing and delivering clinical research trials, enabling me to bring innovative translational therapies to NHS patients through diverse research methodologies and advanced clinical skills. I currently serve as NIHR North East and North Cumbria Regional Specialty Lead for Diabetes, Metabolic and Endocrinology research, providing strategic leadership across the research network.

My PhD awarded in 2025 explored the biopsychosocial impact of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology on people living with diabetes. My published work focuses on diabetes technologies, wellbeing, and the lived experience of using glucose sensing devices. My research emphasises person-centred approaches and the importance of non-stigmatising language in diabetes care.
I maintain active research collaborations with industry partners in diabetes health technology and continue to work across healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors both nationally and internationally; a collaborative approach I have developed over two decades.

I lead diabetes education at ֲýƵ, working alongside clinical experts to ensure contemporary, evidence-based teaching that reflects current practice. My expertise in teaching and learning is recognised through Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy and my leadership of MSc CPD pathways in Professional Practice in Health. I was awarded the prestigious Alice Corey MRC research scholarship for my MClinRes from Newcastle University.

I served as committee member and Chair of the Royal College of Nursing National Diabetes Steering Group (2019-2023) and I am a current member of the regional NIHR NENC Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professional Strategy group. I am a member of the European Psychosocial Aspects of Diabetes (PSAD) study group, the British Academy Early Career Researcher Network, the Foundation of European Nurses in Diabetes (FEND), Fuse (The Centre for Translational Research in Public Health), and Diabetes UK as a Professional Member. Through these roles, I actively influence policy and professional guidance at national and international levels.
