Amy Demirel

Assistant Professor

School: Healthcare and Nursing Sciences

Creative and adventurous with a passion for learning, exploring and advancing surgical practice.

Amy is a registered Operating Department Practitioner (2006- present) and Surgical Care Practitioner (2008- present) with a specialist interest in surgical care, robotic-assisted surgery, simulations and virtual reality.

Amy joined ֲýƵ as a Lecturer in Operating Department Practice in 2022 teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students and remains clinically active. Amy is faculty for international robotic-assisted surgery courses hosted at the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre. She has also been an Associate Lecturer for Oxford Brookes University, teaching overseas in Gibraltar.

Her current projects are surrounding robotic-assisted surgery and training of undergraduate theatre practitioners. She has designed and created, innovative robotic-assisted surgery workshops, which is an exciting collaboration between ֲýƵ, Newcastle Surgical Training Centre and The Royal College of Surgeons.

Amy has written for publication and contributed to the most recent edition of The Curriculum Framework for Surgical Care Practitioners published by The Royal College of Surgeons.

Additionally, Amy was awarded the Association for The Study of Medical Education Educator Development Award in 2024. She has also successfully been award funding for two of her enhanced projects initiatives for the education and training of undergraduate Operating Department Practitioners (ODP) and robotic-assisted surgery.

Amy is a panel member for the Advanced Surgical Technology Incubator group within the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and has been invited to present at conferences and symposiums regarding her research exploring ODPs and Theatre Nurses perceptions towards research, and engagement with industry.

In her free-time Amy enjoys hill and mountain walking, cycling and visiting museums and galleries during city breaks. She also enjoys worldwide travel, meeting new people whilst learning about different customs and cultures.
