Dr Edward Anderson

Assistant Professor

School: Humanities and Social Sciences

Edward works on the history and politics of modern and contemporary India and Britain. His research focuses on the Indian diaspora, transnational politics, Hindutva and Hindu nationalism, and British histories of migration, ethnicity, and multiculturalism.

Before joining ֲýƵ in 2020, Edward was the Smuts Research Fellow in Commonwealth Studies at the University of Cambridge (2015-19). He has also held a postdoctoral position at LMU, Munich, and visiting fellowships at the Centre for Development Studies in Trivandrum, the University of Mumbai, and the London School of Economics. From January 2025, Edward is a Senior Fellow at the South Asia Institute, SOAS, University of London.

At Northumbria, he runs an undergraduate modules on 'Britain's History of Immigration, Multiculturalism and Race' and 'Modern India'. He also leads an MA module on 'Britain's Empires: Imperialism & Resistence in the Modern World'. His teaching has also included the modules: ‘Cultures, Empires and Ideas: Global Histories of Power and Ideology’, ‘Making History’, 'History/Film', and ‘A Disunited Kingdom: The British and Irish Isles since 1689’.

Edward is the Academic Lead for the North East Museums-ֲýƵ Cultural PartnershipHe has served as the Programme Leader for History and Politics, and convenor of the History of Activism Group. From 2023 he co-founded and is co-convenor of the North East South Asia Network (NESAN). He is also the External Examiner for the Modern South Asia postgraduate programmes at the School of Global and Area Studies, University of Oxford.
