The Autumn 2025 edition of ֲýƵ’s newspaper is available to read online or pick up on campus now.

From research influencing national policy to welcoming new leadership, this latest edition showcases some of the exciting updates and developments happening across our university community.

In this issue, we welcome George Clarke as Northumbria's new Chancellor. The award-winning architect, author and TV presenter brings decades of experience transforming communities through design. In a special feature, we explore George's journey from a Washington council estate to becoming a leading voice for social housing reform, and discover why he is relocating his educational charity MOBIE to Sunderland, demonstrating his deep commitment to the North East's future.

This edition features compelling stories of impact and achievement. Research from our Healthy Living Lab has secured a landmark £600 million Government commitment for the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme over the next three years. Meanwhile, the launch of our pioneering Centre for Responsible AI positions the North East as a key player in the nation's AI strategy, while our introduction of Claude for Education makes Northumbria only the second UK university to offer this cutting-edge platform to all students and staff.  We celebrate Dr Liam Pearson-Noseworthy's extraordinary 15-year journey from Sport Central gym instructor to PhD graduate. His research could reshape NHS exercise guidelines for millions of older adults and has been achieved while working full-time throughout.

Impactful outreach work by NUSTEM has been recognised as we celebrate the team receiving the prestigious William Thomson, Lord Kelvin Medal from the Institute of Physics after a decade of inspiring more than 170,000 young scientists across the North East. Fashion students secure multiple awards and industry recognition at Graduate Fashion Week. Two Northumbria graduates collaborate to develop an app to combat excessive screen-time in the UK, Ireland and USA.

Innovation continues to drive our research forward. Discover news of pioneering work using fungi and microbes to create sustainable building materials, biodegradable batteries generated from organic waste, and LED technology making advanced scientific equipment accessible and affordable.
