Overview of Doctoral Research
The effect of whey protein on glycaemia and appetite in healthy and type 2 diabetes males.
David’s doctoral research consists of two interventional studies and one systematic review, all investigating the effects of whey protein on glycaemia and/or appetite. The first study was conducted from the Clinical Research Facility of the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, with 11 type 2 diabetes patients. It was identified that whey protein diminished postprandial glucose excursions when administered with a meal, and increased subjective perceptions of satiety. The second study is investigating the effects of whey protein on food intake and 3-day energy balance, to assess whether it may provide an energy deficit, when compared to placebo. The systematic review will determine the effect of whey protein supplementation on acute and chronic health markers in type 2 diabetes, such as HbA1c, fasting glucose, and postprandial glycaemia.
